I know for many of us, birthday celebrations have changed drastically in the last 10 years. It use to be you could celebrate birthdays whenever, for how ever long, and bring whatever to eat. Of course, the rules have changed. Now, birthday celebrations have to be done at recess or during the last 10 minutes of school. That's it. And cupcakes are a no-no. How sad! That is how I feel. I mean, there are so many children who don't get to have any celebration at home. Unfortunately, they don't get to have the time to feel extra special. And shouldn't we ALL feel that way--atleast once a year? It doesn't have to be with cupcakes..the food is not the important thing here (but oh are they yummy--and you don't have to eat 5 at one time--just one--teach kids responsibility-even when they eat :). It's the chance to celebrate LIFE. I am thinking that it was a few that 'abused' the time and so now we have rules. That is ok. That doesn't have to slow us down from celebrating. We can still incorporate these sorts of things with quality activities that tie to standards and objectives. (allright-off my soapbox)
On to the ideas..
Some ideas besides cupcakes:
* bowl of any fruit--especially berries!
* individual containers of yogurt
* granola packs with a few M&Ms sprinkled inside
* mini-muffins
* banana bread or some sort of sweet bread
* pretzels with chocolate slightly drizzled on top

So cute:) I actually was just thinking of having a spot in my family that the decorations change each month. You know,,,Halloween. Thanksgiving, etc. But I was looking for what I could put there during a birthday month (or at least a week.) and some of these items are perfect!
